Successful recruiters will tell you that past relationships are a huge part of landing players. It’s not about timing the market, it’s TIME IN the market. Pitt assistant Andre Powell has been recruiting the Maryland, DC, Virginia area for years and it’s paying dividends with a talented player.
Jaylen Twyman (6-2, 290) is a 3-star defensive tackle from Washington D.C. Last season, Twyman led his team with 62 tackles, 15 QB hurries and 9 sacks. This Sunday, Twyman will travel to Pittsburgh for Junior Day.
Twyman is a player that Powell has had his eye on for the last couple of years, dating back to his time at Maryland.
Twyman told me, “I’m really looking forward to kicking it with Coach Sims, Coach Powell and Coach Narduzzi. They sound like they have a plan and that’s to take over the ACC and win a National Championship.”
Although he’s had plenty of contact with members of the Pitt staff, Twyman really wants to spend some personal time with them.
“I want to see if this is the real you, like if I was to sign with you, will you switch up? I also want to talk to them and see how they think they can make me a better football player and a better man”, said Twyman.
Twyman is a talented defensive lineman and just so happens his favorite player is a former Pitt Panther.
“One of my favorite players is defensive tackle Aaron Donald. They (Pitt) play my style of football. I’m excited about Pitt because it’s a football town and I’d be surrounded by some of the best coaches and players”, said Twyman.
Twyman currently holds offers from Iowa State, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, Purdue and Temple.
“Right now my top five (in no order) is Pitt, South Carolina, LSU, Maryland and Wake Forest. I plan on committing on February 3, 2017.”
So if Pitt is going to pursue Twyman, they’ll have to be in it for the long run. The process will formally begin this weekend.
